Narcissa Black was not one to waste her time without a really good reason. Time was something she considered valuable, and wasting it was not something she considered wise. She could use it for something.. even if it was the smallest excuse on the planet, but Cissy NEVER wasted it, not matter whay. Even on this day, Narcissa had reason to be alone. Contemplating about what to do about her sister, she considered this of the upmost importance if she where to maintane her family's standards.
Standing on the edge of the lake, Narcissa looked at her reflection in the dark water, her beautiful features sparkling back at her. Yet today there was something different about her face, it wasn’t the same. There was a trace of anger rippled through her eyes, lips and brow as she stood with her hands clenched.
Another thing that Narcissa never did was let her temper rule her. She hated letting an emotion (especially anger) control anything she did. She wanted to make decisions in a clear state of mind, not rashly, and at the moment it was taking all her will not to take it out on some undeserving student. Why would that make a difference? It would only make her angrier that she had let her emotions loose, when she could show more control by holding them in. She would never look weak in font of another person.. she had trouble even letting her emotions go around Lucius, and that was saying something.
Tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, Cissy unclenched her jaw and massaged it gently. ‘Merlin! It’s not even that big of a deal Narcissa.. she’s just a damn hufflepuff.’ She reassured herself in vain. She had struggeled with the same thing time and time again, accepting that her sister was no longer a part of her life. She hated why Andromda had to be something different.. to feel the need to prove something.. Narcissa was still not quite sure what it was exactly that she was trying to prove, but so far it was just making her whole family angry. All this talk of equality and mudbloods being just as good!!!! Gah, it made her want to be sick. Even thinking about muggles and mudbloods being on the same lever as her, Narcissa Black, made bile rise up in her throat, and she had to force it down with a shiver.
Why couldn’t the world just go back to the way it was before Hogwarts? When Andromeda was just like any other Black girl… proud of being a pure blood, loyal to the house of Salazar Slytherin.. NOT HELGA HUFFLEPUFF!

A tall, blonde 7th year stood on the far side of the lake. His left side leaned lazily against a thick tree a few meters from the water’s edge. Lucius Malfoy fancied coming to the lake by himself. This spot was an excellent vantage point to see all who were approaching. The ground rose gently from the waters edge, giving him an exceptional view.
Although it was sunny this afternoon, it was anything but warm. A cool autumn breeze was blowing over the grounds from the mountains to the north. Shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his khaki blazer to protect them, he shifted his weight slightly. As he gazed down, he noticed that the ground was a little over-soft, and a thick muck was slowly creeping up the edges of his brown leather shoes. Face twisted in disgust, he pulled his ebony wand from the pocket of his blazer and muttered a spell. Nothing seemed to change, but as he lifted his foot from the ground, the muck fell away, unable to stick to his charmed loafers. Much better. He thought to himself, returning his foot to the ground, and wand-hand to his pocket.
Looking out over the lake, his breath suddenly caught in his throat. Even from a distance, there was no mistaking the lanky blonde silhouette that was slowly approaching. Narcissa Black. Although they had been engaged for almost a year, the sight of her still did not bring warmth to his heart. Instead, a cold block of dread settled quite uncomfortably into his gut. She did not seem to have noticed him yet, but she undoubtedly would soon enough. There was something he couldn’t place about her, but whatever it was, he couldn’t stand it. Perhaps it was the fact that she had been assigned to him; the fact that she were not HIS choice. He preferred to have control in life, even when it came to the women he associated with. The fact that his future in this matter was already laid out by another, made him very uncomfortable. Technically, as Severus constantly reminded him, it was not Narcissa’s fault. She, as well, had had no say in this matter. Really though, Lucius did not care about ‘fair’.
As she approached, still unaware of his presence, he remained silent. No need to initiate interaction. Quickly, he tried to list the positive facts about her to himself. One, she was indeed, physically beautiful. Blue eyes stood out against her tan skin and her blonde hair, well, Lucius had a soft spot for platinum blondes… MOST platinum blondes. Secondly, her bloodline was one of the purest he had ever seen(apart from his own).
As she grew nearer, he saw anger etched across her soft features. Instinctually curious, he wondered what had made her so angry that she had not noticed him. It was, he was sure, probably something to do with her blood-traitor sister. Out of the three Blacks, Lucius preferred the company of the oldest, Bellatrix. Having never associated with the turncoat Andromeda, that made Narcissa come into second place. By default, he reminded himself.
Preparing himself, he took a deep breath. Appearance was everything, and one must at least be able to remain cordial with another. No matter how much he loathed her.
“Good Afternoon Narcissa.” He said, refusing to give her the familiarity of her nickname.

Being ignorant was not something Narcissa did without intentionally doing it. Most of the time she simply ignored things that she felt herself above, or in many circumstances not wanting to be associated with. During these events, Narcissa simply acted as if she noticed nothing, her aloof air giving off a aura that made people know she was not one to be involved.
It was a power hand, which she used to very often, that kept her out of situations that most other people would get in trouble for. She could be one of those people to get into a situation at the wrong time and still not be punished because of the manner in which she was there. Just because Narcissa was present at a certain event did not mean she was actually there. It was her own natural invisibility cloak, which cloaked her in a way better than one that made you simply invisible. It was her gift.
A Black gift.
In this case, Cissy was caught off guard by Lucius’ presence, causing her to inwardly scold herself for being subconsciously ignorant. Straightening herself up, Narcissa’s anger was immediately erased from her features, and her once clenched fists dropped to her sides loosely. It was a defense mechanism, one might say, to act as if nothing in the world could dent her stony attitude, but as soon as she shoved her emotions away, they burned her insides like acid.
Merlin.. how could she have missed Lucius Malfoy her wonderfull fiancé. Ha. What a laugh. Wonderfull was quite the opposite of the word one might use to describe his attitude towards Narcissa. Icy or.. cold would be more appropriate. Tossing her hair over her shoulder, Narcissa arched her eyebrows curiously as he approached her.
“Good Afternoon Narcissa.”
How formal.
In return Narcissa looked him over searching for some kind of sign that he wanted something, but just like so many other skilled SLytherins he hid his emotions well. Giving Lucius a delicate smile Narcissa inclined her head, “Nice enough.” She replied smoothly. “What brings you out here alone Lucius? Escaping your hoard of women?” she asked teasily.
Being flirtatious by nature, Narcissa couldn’t deny that she liked Lucius. He was one of the best looking and sophisticated students in her house, but she could never forget that he liked her just about as much as he liked someone of lesser status. Lucius what a heart throb throughout the female Slytherin population, and he knew it. Narcissa was never one to display her true feelings for a person lightly, and never ever first.

Lucius watched as Narcissa studied his face. Although her expression remained blank, her eyes were quizzical; searching his face for any sign of affection. He hated that look. I was the same look she gave him every time they had an encounter. If he cared, he would have felt bad, sorry that he showed her no warmth or love when he knew she wanted it so badly. The past year or so though, she had improved, he could give her that much. Although he still felt a little ‘clung to’ with her, she was no longer throwing herself at him, and making a complete fool of herself. She gave him his space.
Perhaps it was his fault. He only gave her attention when he wanted something physical from her. True, he could get it anywhere he wanted, but it was his way of establishing ownership. No other male would intrude upon Lucius’s fiancé, if he remembered to display every once and again that she were his. It also ensured that she would not stray. As much as he despised the girl now, they were to spend the rest of their lives together… he didn’t want his good to arrive ‘tampered with’. As long as he gave her a little affection once a month or so, she would remain his little pet, waiting for her next treat. Thinking for a moment, he decided it was about time for puppy’s next treat.
As she spoke, he allowed his features to soften, and a smile to grace his lips. ”Escaping your hoard of women?” she asked, in a teasing manner. Wrapping his arm coyly around her waist and pulling her close to him, he said, “It’s tiresome, having women follow you around, pleading for attention.” Then, whispering in her ear, he added icing to the cake. “That’s what I like about you. You let me have my space.” He knew it was cruel, to play with her emotions like this, but really, she was his. Her feelings had been promised to him by her parents, and he could do with them as he pleased for the time being. Besides, a man had needs.
Lucius knew how to play the game. He knew what women wanted. He had, after all, gained seven years of experience in the ways of making girls swoon. Retracting his arm slightly, he let his hand come to rest on the small of Narcissa’s back. Women considered this particular place of contact so intimate, that more often than not, their heart fluttered wildly inside their chest. He felt the warmth of her skin through her shirt, and it stirred something inside him. It aroused him. Narcissa or not, she was a women; a women he wanted something from. Perhaps he would not get it today, or tomorrow, but soon. He was putting in the work needed to get what he wanted from her.
Then, he played to another woman’s weakness: her emotions. “What had you looking so angry today?” he asked, placing his opposite hand under her chin, and guiding her eyes upward. “I never see that kind of fire in your eyes.” He said, in a worried tone, while looking concernedly into her eyes. Right now she was just another girl. Another woman to conquest. He would do what needed to be done.

Narcissa’s scrutiny had caught his attention and she pulled her gaze away quickly, placing it back in a more appropriate state. She was just doing what was naturally when it came to conversing with men. Lucius Malfoy or no, she needed to have some sign of what they where thinking in order to play the game that revolved around the heart, mind, and body. It was dangerous and many girls had lost more than their pride playing it, but Narcissa was not one to be snared so easily.
Arching her blonde eyebrows curiously, she let Lucius’s arm slide around her waist. Her stomach fluttered nervously “It’s tiresome, having women follow you around, pleading for attention.” “That’s what I like about you. You let me have my space.” Narcissa’s body ached at the pain of holding her emotions back. Pressing her teeth down on the inside of her bottom lip, she kept her cool, not wanting to give him any sign that she was being affected.
She had seen this happen to so many other girls, including herself, even if it wasn’t Lucius. She was smarter than this, she knew it, but something inside her made it difficult for her to stick to what she knew. Letting the corner of her lip pull up in a playful smirk, she looked at him quizzically, “Really Lucius, I though you would find a better reason for liking me than me ‘giving you space’. Her reply was silky as she tilted her head so slightly to one side. If another girl would have done this, it would have looked quite playfull.. something reminding one of a puppy, but the way Narcissa did it had an art. It was more seductive than anything else, and once again it was a subconscious flirtatious movement which she could not help.
She could play the game.
As his hand slid to the sensitive small of her back, she gave a little gasp of surprise. Her body was alerted, and she could feel the hairs on the back of her neck stand up as her heart leapt. She resisted the urge to shiver, and instead regained her momentarily loss of composure, before her face was moved to look up at him, his hand gently cupping her chin.
“What had you looking so angry today? I never see that kind of fire in your eyes.”
“Andromeda..” the words slipped out of her mouth before she could stop them. She could have kicked herself! “Merlin Cissy, you are such a sucker!’. If it where any other man, she could have easily stopped the words that came, and given him some witty response hinting he would never know, but not with Lucius. She seemed unable to protect herself form him, which she knew would be her demise. He was never this nice to her without wanting something.

“Really Lucius, I though you would find a better reason for liking me than me ‘giving you space’ ”, Narcissa said coyly. She was trying, and it was a cute attempt. Smiling in a surprisingly loving manner, he looked her square in the face. “You know I wouldn’t have agreed to marry you, if that was all that I liked.” He really was evil. He knew though, that this was exactly was she wanted. She wanted confirmation of feelings. She wanted to hear, no matter if she flat out asked for it or not, that he loved her too. Maybe someday, he thought, shuddering mentally at the thought of being in love with Narcissa. You’ll have to wait for the real thing, Honey.
Lucius stopped himself from downright laughing, as he felt Narcissa’s sharp intake of breath. It was funny to him, that she was resisting so much. This was what she was always wanting from him, and now that she was getting it, she was hesitant to give into it. She wants to look strong, he realized. Of course she wanted to look strong. Part of her must know that he was playing with her. There must be some shred of common sense deep within this girl, that she was grappling with.
He felt her pulse quicken as he touched her chin, and smiled to himself as the name of her sister came tumbling out of her mouth. Just as he thought, Andromeda had been on her mind. A look of sympathy on his face, he used the hand positioned on her back to guide her into his arms. Hugging her, he said, “Don’t worry about that blood-traitor sister of yours.” He said, pulling back slightly, and running the back of his hand gently down her cheek. “You know that mudbloods can never be equal to us, and you have one sister left who believes that whole-heartedly.” He said softly. He was amazed by his acting. He marveled at all the things you need say to a girl, just to get a little physical retribution.

Gazing up at Lucius, she was slightly ‘star struck’ as she struggled with common sense and her attraction to him. He was her weakness, and he knew how to use that against her. She was on the verge of ripping her hair out in turmoil (though she never would ACTUALLY resort to ripping it out, no it was too precious), or slapping him in the face for being such a cad. She hated what he did to her, and because of her inability to send him away, she found herself unable to even breath.
“You know I wouldn’t have agreed to marry you, if that was all that I liked.”
That’s rich. Everyone knew that Lucius was set against their engagement, though he couldn’t proclaim it, word still got around that he was refusing to actually ‘act’ like Narcissa Black’s fiancé. Narcissa of all people! How could he NOT want her to be his wife? She was perfect, yet for some reason, Lucius seemed to be against it from the start. Merlin, he was difficult.. or mad. Either way, she knew she was falling into a pit that she couldn’t get out of.
“Don’t worry about that blood-traitor sister of yours. You know that mudbloods can never be equal to us, and you have one sister left who believes that whole-heartedly.”
As his arms wrapped around her, Cissy felt the rush to weep, to get all of the mixed feelings out of her system. Anger rippeled through her as she once again fell to his charm. Placing her hands on either side of his shoulder blades, she held him in a light embrace. She couldn’t whole heartily hug him back, she still was strong enough not to let that happen.
She hated him for doing this to her, the bastard was cruel beyond reasoning to her, yet she couldn’t drive that far enough into her heart and body. Why was she so weak? Why could he bend her like this? She was wrapped around his darn pinky, and she couldn’t cut herself loose! He was like a cancer that spread throughout her being. She couldn’t say anything, she was to twisted inside to bring herself to utter anything that would make sense, so she just stood there, like a doll. A pretty little doll, waiting to be broken.

Lucius felt Narcissa’s thin frame trembling in his arms. She did not say anything, but let out a shuddering breath of anguish. Her body was growing warmer, and as he glanced down, he saw her cheeks redden, and her eyes well up in anger. He could feel what was going on inside her head. She knew she was his, and there was nothing she could do about it. She knew that in the end, she would bend to his will. That was the way it should be.
Still….
A strange feeling was engulfing him. A feeling he had never experienced; Guilt. He felt, for the first time in a long time, that he might be going about this all wrong. Shaking his head, he retracted such a silly thought. He was never wrong. Why should he treat her differently? This was his seventh year... he needed to have fun! He had his whole life to be lovey-dovey with Narcissa, so why waste his last year here tied to her? His thoughts returned to his original state of mind, he moment he was in. He needed to say something…anything…
Standing there, holding his fiancé in his arms, he said, “Why don’t we go somewhere?” Perhaps an adjustment of scenery would change her mood. Her emotions had been corrupted by her thoughts, and she needed to take her mind off of things. Unwrapping her from his arms, he began strolling casually around the lake towards the end furthest from the school and the rest of the grounds. He assumed she would follow, so no words need be issued asking her to do so. If she didn’t, then good riddance to her for the afternoon.
Although she was but a few feet behind, him, the space between them was of some relief. Being so close to her for so long, and just…talking… The air had become stale, and he had been overwhelmed with a feeling of claustrophobia. He hated that he put her in these positions; where he felt like he had done something wrong, or as if he should say something to make her feel better. He didn’t want to make her feel better. He didn’t want to change his ways. He was happy with who he was, and he hated that she wanted him to be different. It was not her place to ask such a thing of him. Who did she think she was anyways? His wife? Not yet, my dear.. Not yet… he thought to himself, as though silently reminding her of that fact.

Being a Slytherin, one had to have the amazing ability to read other’s emotions. If one was unable to do so, then they would find themselves being ripped apart by others. It was a kill or be killed emotionally house, and one always had to fend for themselves. No matter what. It didn’t matter if you trusted your boyfriend or lover more than anything, you could never depend on them for too much. It was a snake eat snake world, and Narcissa was getting the lesser hand for the time being.
Narcissa could feel something different within Lucius. It was not necessarily the way he held her, or the way he breathed or even acted at all. It was just something. She could sense it, and she suddenly felt alarmed, not sure what this new feeling would have in store for her. Luckily enough his arms stayed around her, now a little more comforting than they had been before… not much but still better.
“Why don’t we go somewhere?
This phrase he uttered caught Cissy off guard completely. She was surprised to find herself in his presence at all, and now he was requesting that they do something else. As he unwound his arms, Narcissa quickly brushed her cheeks with the back of her hand, not wanting any sign of her struggling emotions to show. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear she followed after him, Cissy's high and arrogant air regained.
Though it was all an act.
It always was. She could never pour her heart out to anyone for fear of it being used against her. Once again, a snake eat snake world. She was curiously to the way Lucius was acting. It was not us usually cold air that seemed to surround him, though she notice he looked slightly relieved to be away from her. This was ok. She was just glad he wasn’t sending her away. She could have scoffed at the idea. Her being sent away like a trained pet. Though she would have responded the same way… Merlin!
Catching up, she walked beside him, though giving him distance. She was still angry, though much less so considering the events unfolding. Perhaps he was changing? No. Lucius Malfoy didn’t change for ANYONE. Especially not any woman. “Where to?” she asked, arching a brow, her eyes now perfectly clear of showing that she had been on the verge of tears only moments ago.

Lucius flinched ever so slightly as Narcissa’s cool voice rent the air behind him. She was coming. Bloody wonderful. he thought to himself, rolling his eyes, and exhaling in a slightly indignant manner. Just when he had thought that MAYBE she was coming around to his way of thinking, here she was, trotting on his heal like an excited purebred puppy. Now this meant he had to actually think of somewhere to go. He had hoped that she would stay, and wallow in her emotions for a while, so that he could return to his dormitory and speak with Severus or Rodolphus. He could have kicked himself for saying anything to her at all, but scoffed at the idea of soiling the seat of his slacks. He would just have Rodolphus give him a hearty slap in the face later this evening.
Think Lucius, think! he urged himself, knowing that there were only a few more seconds of time that could pass before his silence became awkward. He had proposed the change of location, so he must be the one to establish the destination. “Let’s go to the quidditch stadium.” He offered, more of a command than anything else. The Stadium was perfect. Since the sun was going down, the air was growing colder, and the majority of students would be headed into the castle for dinner. Not many people to see the two Slytherins… together.
Slowing his stride slightly, he brought himself back to his original goal of the afternoon: physical fulfillment. If he wanted to actually achieve his goal, he would have to put in a little work. The weather was playing to his advantage. With the temperature dropping, physical contact was the best way of warming one’s shivering body. Although he was a tad disgusted by the cliché, the sun was also setting. In about fifteen minutes, the sky would begin glowing a brilliant mix of oranges and purples. No matter what any girl claimed, cuddling with a man beneath a sunset would cause her to become putty in his hands. It was he exact scenario giddy little schoolgirls dreamed about.
Narcissa fell into step beside him as they grew closer to the quidditch pitch. Lucius could feel he glances of students that they passed heading the opposite direction, but he didn’t care. He shot a glare of pure hatred at a young Ravenclaw, who was downright staring at the pair as they passed. Letting out a yelp of fear, the boy took off toward to castle steps. Allowing a brilliant smile to grace his lips, he looked at Narcissa. She was holding her head high, but he felt as if she were bracing herself for something. Draping his arm casually over her shoulder, he laughed. “Relax.” He crooned softly into her ear. “you look as if you’re scared of me.” Honestly, part of him wanted to see her explode. She never showed any emotion around him, and part of him felt aroused at the prospect of her biting back, telling him what she believed to be wrong with him. He knew though, that she was not capable of it. There was no way on earth she would ever do anything that might cause him to send her away. He relished the power he had over her.

Narcissa didn’t like the idea of being used anymore than Bellatrix did. That was one thing they had in common. But the thing that set them apart was how they handled it. Bellatrix would never allow anyone Narcissa knew to use her. Cissy on the other hand would let certain people use her in order just to feel their attention. One of these people was her mother, Druelle Black, and the other was Lucius Malfoy. As long as either one of them offered some sort of reward for, whether it was her mother’s attention or affection, or Lucius’ company and affection.
It was a tradeoff, Narcissa would tell herself, trying to justify her stupid actions, but it never seemed to help. It’s because it wasn’t true, and she knew it, now matter how much she didn’t want to. Believe something hard enough didn’t make it true. And no matter how much she wanted Lucius to want her company for something other than selfish reasons, that would never make it true.
“Let’s go to the quidditch stadium.”
The quidditch stadium? Narcissa arched an eyebrow, but followed none the less. Why there? Shoving away the curiosity, she watched as passersby looked at them like a freak show. Looking at them, down the crook of her nose she caught the glances of random girls as they scuttled away. Narissa caught the look her fiancé’ gave the Ravenclaw and let a smooth chuckled escape her full lips.
As Lucius moved closer, she watched a smile graze his features. He was certainly a handsome man. It was hard to Narcissa to fathom that he was only just now in his seventh year at Hogwarts. He had the look and maturity of a older man, more capable of making decisions that many adults Narcissa found herself acquainted with. She shook her head mentally, ridding herself of drooling like sensation of staring at him this way.
Feeling his arm wrap around her shoulders, Narcissa managed to maintain her regular breathing and walking, as they continued on their way to the stadium. Her brain was going in slow motion, and she hardly caught the words that came from his mouth. “Relax. you look as if you’re scared of me.”
Narcissa’s breath caught in her throat as he spoke in her ear, his breath on the side of her face. STOP IT! She shouted to herself inwardly as she felt all sense of warning slip away. He was like a drug that she couldn’t get away from, an addiction that she was stuck on. Narcissa bit the inside of her lip to bring herself back to earth, and slowing loosened up, turning her head sideways to look at him curiously.
“Me? Scared of you?” she asked playfully, before giving a seductive chuckle, “What makes you think that?” she asked teasingly. Narcissa thanked herself inwardly for keeping her cool, and regaining her usual flirting tactics that defined her almost as much as her beauty with men.
